A fitness tracker altered my life–it changed how I think about goal-setting and monitoring my practice, it shifted the intentionality of my travels, and it created a new worldwide community of people who share my interests. I’m not alone; roughly a quarter of U.S. adults use some type of tracker. The life that is measured is among four new trends.
My last two articles have reviewed four mega trends and four emerging trends in learning. This post considers four adjoining trends that are affecting society at large and, as a result, are impacting education directly and indirectly.
1. Inclusion and equity. Organizations Nationwide, even worldwide, are coming to terms with all the unfinished business of humor, inclusion, equity and diversity. Quick social progress on LGBTQ rights and visible campaigns in reaction to an unaddressed inequity have induced learning institutions to reconsider their culture, policies and practices.
In 2017, NewSchools Venture Fund Studied race, inclusion, equity and diversity in education organizations and recognized large gaps. In response, they have been encouraged diverse leadership. Education Board Partners is helping charitable boards become more representative.
Carlos Moreno just hosted a five-part show on race For Big Picture Learning and spoke about it at their yearly conference. His attempts are representative of a large percentage of school districts and networks trying hard to become inclusive and to promote more equitable results.
A recent convening Including student leaders indicated that although some high schools are making progress, more must be performed at leading universities so as to create more inclusive environments.
For instruction leaders, ignoring or Inadequately dealing with the push for equity and inclusion will probably get you fired. The reverse side is that being proactive and welcoming can improve enrollment, completion, and success rates of students.
2. Lifelong Learning. About Ten years ago, there was a widespread recognition that studying for a period of 16 years and then working for 40 years did not work –that learning has to be ongoing to accommodate to the innovation economy.
In 2015,Learners for Life was among the five XQ Learner Goals framing The huge grant contest that sought to reinvent high school. They defined the goal as”Self-driven, self-directed. Curious learners–about themselves, and also the entire world. Inventors of their own learning avenues, careers, and lives.”
Learning about how one learns also revealed at a Chinese graduate profile at 2016.
For schools Trend means helping students to become more conscious of how they learn best and nurturing productive learning habits such as journaling and curating a portfolio. It means more voice and choice in learning, and not as routine and compliance. For postsecondary institutions, the trend means catering to the demands of both adult students and cultivating long-term learning associations.
3. Quantified Life. Past Fitness, customers are visiting more comprehensive info about the weather, their health, their driving, and their display time. With detectors and cameras anyplace , it is 24/7 surveillance with couple of agreements in place.
For schools, the shift from print to digital learning has generated a Dramatic gain in the amount of formative feedback to learners (although a lack of interoperability currently hastens its usefulness). Schools can help students cope with the measured lifetime by learning how to track their own data and take possession of the learning profiles.
4. Mindfulness. Top performers In every field regularly use some type of mindfulness regular. It’s a part of a wider wellness movement illustrated by Arianna Huffingtons founding of Thrive Global.
Schools worldwide are embracing broader goals that frequently incorporate social and emotional learning and that can often incorporate practices of mindfulness.

It includes mindfulness and willful facilitation which helps students gain control of their own behavior and socialize with other individuals.
These four trends–inclusion, lifelong learning, measured self and mindfulness–have become ubiquitous in The press and becoming part of the culture. Many colleges are attempting to Understand what they mean for reporting and practices.
